DAY 3 to 7
Ski touring in Iceland & sightseeing
With rental cars, we have flexibility and can drive to the starting points for the ski tours. The selection of tours in Iceland is diverse. Everything is on offer, from gentle slopes to steep summit faces. The ski tours mostly start at sea level, and the highest peaks are around 900-1,100 metres high. The ski guides determine the destination of the ski tour daily, adapted to the current snow, weather, and avalanche conditions.
The Special: Your Heli-Skiing Day
On the day the weather is absolutely perfect, we deviate from the standard programme. The helicopter picks us up and flies us deep into the untouched Arctic wilderness. Your guide will lead you to inaccessible peaks from which we experience seemingly endless descents to the sea. A day you will never forget!
Spectacular Icelandic Nature Highlights
Iceland is the island of fire and ice. In addition to the sporting challenges in the snow, you'll experience the raw power of nature up close: One day we'll visit bubbling geysers, steaming hot springs, and the breathtaking natural spectacles that make this island so unique..

Tour suggestions in Iceland
Mulakolla (970 m) – The Summit to Sea Classic: Directly from Ólafsfjörður we begin this legendary tour. We climb up to the summit over excessively steep slopes.. Once at the top, the view takes your breath away: you look out at the endless, deep blue Polar Sea. The descent takes us in wide turns over immaculate slopes directly down to the Atlantic surf..
Amfinsfjall (853m) – Descent with sea views: This striking peak rewards us after a steady ascent with one of the most spectacular descents in North Iceland.. We carve down vast, treeless slopes to the sea.
Barkarolla (920 m): The start is in Olafsfjördur after a few minutes' drive. Via gently sloping slopes, we reach the summit – ideal as a warm-up tour or on days with challenging snow conditions.
Karlsárfjall (988 m) Shortly before Dalvik, the route initially leads us flat into a valley before steadily ascending through a small canyon. From the broad summit plateau, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the fjord. Various descent options, from steep to gentle, are available for the return journey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about your Iceland Ski Tour
Where exactly will we be staying in Iceland and what is the accommodation like?
Our fixed base for the entire ski touring week is the charming fishing village Ólafsfjörður on the Troll Peninsula. We are staying there in the popular Brimnes Cabins. These cosy wooden cabins are idyllically situated directly on the lake shore and offer genuine Scandinavian comfort.. Each hut has a small kitchen, free Wi-Fi and the absolute highlight after an intensive day of touring: a private hot pot (jacuzzi) heated with geothermal hot water on the terrace.. Here, you can relax as a team and, with a bit of luck, even observe the Northern Lights in the Arctic sky..
What are the group sizes and which guides will be accompanying us?
We are with a total of 4 groups and a maximum of 7 people per guide on the move. This excellent staff-to-guest ratio ensures maximum flexibility in daily tour planning and makes the trip perfect for private groups of friends or teams who wish to remain among themselves.. Our standard procedure is that two groups are always out on the same mountain. They don't necessarily have to be on the same route. But this has the advantage that we can quickly help each other in an emergency. This is a big safety plus in a remote country like Iceland, where medical care is good, but alpine rescue cannot be on site as quickly as in the Alps.
You will be guided exclusively by experts with the highest qualifications in mountaineering.. Our PEAKX guide team includes state-certified ski instructors, state-certified mountain and ski guides, as well as highly qualified police and army mountain guides..
How does heli-ski touring work?
Heli-ski touring is one of the absolute highlights of our Iceland trip.. If the local weather and snow conditions permit, we use the helicopter for an extended day ski tour.. The helicopter will safely fly us to spectacular, untouched peaks that would otherwise be inaccessible.. From there, under the guidance of our state-certified guides, we enjoy endless dream descents in the Arctic firn..
What natural highlights can we experience away from ski touring?
Iceland is world-famous for its surreal landscapes.. As well as skiing, we'll take plenty of time to explore the spectacular natural sights of the volcanic island.. You'll experience bubbling geysers, roaring waterfalls and steaming thermal baths in the volcanic Lake Mývatn area.. A dip in the natural hot springs is the perfect and unforgettable way to unwind after a strenuous day in the snow.
What fitness requirements do I need to meet for ski touring?
Since we start our ski tours in Iceland at sea level, the strenuous acclimatisation needed in the Alps is completely eliminated.. Nevertheless, you should be in good condition for daily ascents of 800 to 1,200 metres above sea level (pure walking time approx. 4 to 6 hours) to bring. Technically, you should be proficient in skiing safely in all snow conditions (including wind-packed hardpack or deep powder) and be familiar with kick-turns on steeper terrain and walking with crampons..
On-site safety – What measures do you take to minimise avalanche risk?
Your safety in Arctic terrain is our top priority.. As there is no comprehensive avalanche report according to alpine standards in Iceland, we rely on a complete, professional on-site safety concept.:
Daily safety briefing & adjusted planning: Every morning we start with a joint safety briefing.. The tour planning is flexibly and precisely adapted by our guides daily to the current snow, weather, and avalanche conditions..
Experienced guides with additional qualifications: You will be guided exclusively by experts with the highest qualifications (including state-certified mountain and ski guides, as well as police and army mountain guides).. Our guides have years of experience in Iceland, undergo regular further training and possess important additional qualifications as mountain rescuers and paramedics..
On-site snowpack stability tests: Our guides don't just check the data, they also perform active stability tests directly on the snowpack in the field to analyse the conditions on site live..
Emergency training for LVS on the first day: On the very first day, the entire group will undertake intensive avalanche safety training.. This is how we ensure everyone in the team has a perfect grasp of operating the LVS device, probe and shovel..
Doubly secured on the mountain: On our tours, there are always at least two guides working on the same mountain.. In the event of an incident, immediate professional support and coordination are thus ensured..
Established standard measures In the terrain, we strictly adhere to tried-and-tested safety rules (such as maintaining safe distances during ascents and skiing steeper slopes as individual descents).
Your typical PEAKX ski touring day in Iceland: Itinerary & Dream Summits
Ski touring in Iceland is unlike anything you know from the Alps.. So that you can imagine exactly how your Arctic adventure unfolds, we have summarised a typical day from our travel itinerary for you here:
07:30 AM – Good morning in ski touring paradise
Your day begins with a look out of the window of your cosy Brimnes Cabin. Outside, the frozen lake glitters in the first, mystical light of the Arctic morning, while in the background, the snow-capped giants of the Troll Peninsula loom.. Over a freshly brewed coffee and a hearty breakfast, you discuss the day with your friends and your PEAKX guide.. You pack your lunch for the mountain, and feel the anticipation growing.
08:30 AM – The PEAKX Safety Briefing
Before we load the skis into the car, your certified guide will conduct the daily safety briefing. Your guide will analyse the avalanche report the evening before and discuss the snowpack structure and stability test results with their colleague. He presents you with the safest route for the day, perfectly tailored to the weather and your group's abilities..
09:15 – Short transfer to the start of the tour
We are packing our rental cars. Since Ólafsfjörður is located in the epicentre of the best descents, most starting points are just a stone's throw away. After a short, scenically spectacular drive along the fjord, we strap on our skins directly at the water's edge..
Our potential ski touring summits around Ólafsfjörður
Depending on the conditions and your fitness, our guides select the best destination daily..
14:30 – High-fives by the fjord & Icelandic après-ski
After a brilliant descent, we arrive back at the seashore with burning thighs and a broad grin. On the way back, we often make a stop in the quaint fishing village of Dalvík.. In a cosy harbourside café, we'll toast to our summit victory with a local Icelandic beer or a hot soup..
16:30 – Wellness and regeneration in the geothermal hot pot
Back at the Brimnes Cabins, perhaps the best ritual of the trip awaits you.You put on your swimwear and climb straight into the steaming hot tub on your cabin's terrace.. The 38-degree geothermal spring water perfectly relaxes your muscles for the next day..
19:30 – Team spirit at dinner
In your cabin's kitchen, you cook together as a team or visit a local restaurant and end the evening in a convivial atmosphere..
What are the weather and snow like during your travel time in Iceland?
We are deliberately running our ski touring trips from End of April to early May through. This period is the absolute favourite among Iceland experts and offers you brilliant conditions for the perfect end to the season.:
Stable spring weather: The weather is statistically significantly more stable and milder at this stage than in the depths of winter, often stormy March..
Endlessly long days: Thanks to its location just below the Arctic Circle, the days are already extremely long – in mid-April, the sun doesn't set until after 9 p.m. in some places.. This gives us enormous time flexibility and absolute relaxation without time pressure when ski touring..
The absolute highlight – firn all day: Due to the shallow sunlight in the far north, the snow does not thaw as quickly or drastically as in the spring in the Alps.. This means for you: Fantastic, buttery-smooth spring snow, which often remains perfectly rideable throughout the entire day.!
Ski touring equipment Iceland: What is essential to pack?
The Arctic nature is wild and unpredictable. A well-thought-out Gear for your ski tour in Iceland is the key to your safety and a brilliant sense of departure. In principle, the itinerary isn’t all that different from a challenging spring tour in the Alps, but you absolutely must pay attention to these details:
The perfect freeride touring skis: We recommend skis with a middle width of at least 90 mm. As we face changeable snow conditions in Iceland – ranging from the finest powder to compacted wind-hardened snow and slush – a wider ski will give you the lift and stability you need.
Crampons (Absolutely mandatory!): As the snow cover freezes significantly at night due to the maritime climate, crampons are essential for morning ascents.. They give you the necessary grip and prevent dangerous slipping on the hard ice cover..
Emergency equipment A modern, digital 3-antenna avalanche transceiver with fresh batteries, a sturdy avalanche shovel, and an avalanche probe are standard.
Layering clothes A fully windproof and waterproof Gore-Tex hardshell jacket and trousers are essential due to the often stormy Arctic winds. Also pack two pairs of gloves (a thin pair for the ascent, a warm pair for the descent) as well as a warm hat and well-fitting ski goggles..
Our PEAKX luggage tip: As domestic flights and airlines enforce strict weight limits, you should take your heavy ski touring boots (approx. 3 kg) straight into the cabin with you. According to IATA guidelines, you must carry your ABS avalanche airbag backpack in your hand luggage, with the gas cartridge screwed in, and register it with your airline in advance.. Exceptions apply to electronic airbags.
What additional costs will I incur?
Additional costs you should plan for:
Your international flight to Keflavík (approximately €400 to €800, depending on when you book)
Airline ski luggage fees (approx. €45 to €100 per leg)
Catering for the lodge, alcoholic beverages, restaurant visits. The cost of living in Iceland is quite high compared to Europe. How much you spend on food and drink will, of course, depend on your personal preferences.
